Mary Jo Deering, PhD, is Director for Informatics Dissemination in the National Cancer Institute's Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT). She is responsible for communication and outreach for NCICB's cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid™ (caBIG™) and oversees activities to promote patient-centric tools. She coordinates CBIIT's biomedical informatics activities with other NCI, NIH, and Federal organizations and with national health information technology activities. Dr. Deering is also the lead staff for the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS) National Health Information Infrastructure Workgroup, which prepares recommendations on health information policy for the HHS Secretary, and for the NCVHS Workgroups on the Nationwide Health Information Network and on Secondary Uses of Data, which provide recommendations for the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Prior to joining CBIIT Dr. Deering was Deputy Director for eHealth and Management in the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) in HHS. Dr. Deering served on the Federal Communication Commission's Advisory Committee on Telecommunications and Health Care.
